Do you know of some good resources to learn more about the history of art and rituals of Goddess worship?

B Bear asked the question:

I have read art history books for various time periods and they briefly mention art and sculptures related to goddess worship, but they don’t get into details about how they might have used art in relation to their worship & what their rituals might have been like. What fiction and non-fiction books do you recommend, for any historical time period?

You might find: “Savage Breast: One Man’s Search for the Goddess” a useful book. It is non-fiction and has some good material and images in it.

You can read excerpts on the website:

    And here’s the Amazon.com page:

The beginning of it all is The Mother of the Universe who has no name and is called the Tao who is the mother of the universe.

And also, here are two books I would recommend if you’re looking for Celtic information:

The Celtic Goddess: Great Queen or Demon Witch? by Claire French

Celtic Women: In Legend, Myth and History by Lyn Webster Wilde

by goddess i assume you mean wiccan goddesses.. instead of history which is corrupted by christian religion. look into wiccan and druidic practices.. Solitary Practitioner: a witches guide is a great wiccan one.

being that there are many goddesses and gods in pagan religion. you need to choose one to follow the history. Diana, Flora and Hestia are good ones to start with.. below is a link to the more popular ones

If you’re looking to study the history of this, be careful. There are lots of biased books out there on Wicca that have grossly distorted history. Llewellyn publishing is notorious for this. Female deities and related archetypes have shown up in plenty of cultures over the years, however there was really no monotheistic “Goddess” religion that was around before the 20th century.

I would also look at archaeological studies done for Artemis of Ephesus and what little is known of the Eleusian Mysteries surrounding Demeter and Persephone.

Traditionally the Thesmophoria was a women-only three-day festival honoring Demeter and even included dirty jokes told for religious purposes!

Talk to members of various Pagan Reconstructionist groups for more information. I can point you towards a Hellenic one and I am sure you can find others on Yahoo Groups with the following keywords — Pagan, reconstructionist, goddess, polytheist.
