I want to learn a bit more about classical (greek and roman) art, what do you know about it?

alpha mutt asked the question:

Aside from being greek/roman and from that period, what makes it classical? And what are some of it’s most notable characteristics? Which are it’s most known artists? Are all the sculptures just people standing around, or did they sculpt animals, and what about paintings?

Ok, I admit it, this is for homework, but maybe you could at least point me in the right direction, or maybe tell me where I could find some information, I tried wikipedia and some searches, no luck. Could you post some websites I could try?

Thanks a bunch.

try writing about contra-posto, this is the way the sculptures were standing. basically it’s the pose. it’s a balance with weight distributed on one leg more then the other. this and the idea of the ideal nude or bodily perfection in anatomy and motion made things classical. the Greeks were fascinated with the perfection of the human body and in the classical era three things that were in every good sculpture, movement anatomy and proportion. some animals where sculpted like horses but they most likely had a rider. like the sculpture of Marcus Aurelius. or mythical creatures in battle with humans like the relief sculptures of the Parthenon called the battle of the lapiths and the centaurs. there is also a sculture of a man being eaten alive by a snake with his sons. most animal scultures were done like this as for the romans most of the roman work were copies of greek bronze works.
heres somewhere to start enjoy and good luck
we just had a test on this stuff in my art history class at vwc

You know, classical is something that is considered beautiful in every period. Most notable characteristic: the center of art is a man, his or hers inner and physical beauty; in sculpture idealizing man’s body, most famous are Myron’s “Discobolus” and Polykleitos’s “Doriforos”; paintings: vase painting in different styles, the most famous type of vase is called amphora. But there’s really too much of it, I would suggest you look up in some art history book.

    What makes Classical, Classical?
…It is usually highly decorated, lots of extra ornaments. It’s design is mostly a mixture of Graceful organic lines and horizontal/vertical lines. There is a use of paterns aswell, . Dark and rich colors, high contrast (lights and darks), and lots of Gold. Shiny luxerious things, heavy and expensive matterials - marble stone, cherry wood ect.

Here is a site with good examples of Classical Design…

Well known Classical Painters?…(The Ninja Turtles, lol)
Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael.

Hope this gave some ideas,..good luck
