The only way to get good at it is doing it and to constantly practice and also always to think what worked and what did not and to try to understand why certain things won’t work.
You will make less mistakes if you read up on it a bit, so you don’t have to repeat common mistakes - your library will have books on the subject - or if you take a class where you teacher tells you some background. Reading up on the properties and characteristics of your material will generally help you to better workmanship.
Make whatever you like for learning. It does not greatly matter, though start with simple shapes and then make them more complicated.
I would start with learning how to draw what ever you like to sculpt, what turns you on. If you want to sculpt human figures, bust, etc. You need to learn about the anatomy of it. Then you make a model out of clay then from there anything goes, wood, stone, concrete, etc. If you can afford to go to art classes it would help a lot. I can not afford it myself. I am learning to sculpt stone from books. Go to amazon.com and search for books on how to carve clay, wood, stone etc.Good luck and don’t quit.
