Is there a lot of math involved in ceramic’s and Sculpture?

Nails asked the question:

I am doing an HND in fine art and as part of the course we need to have classes on ceramic’s and sculpture. I am so nervous about starting these tutorial’s, as I am really bad at math!!! I have a learning disability and I am ashamed to tell anyone. :S

no math worth mentioning in ceramics and sculpture. You might occasionally be called to add or multiplicate something (e.g. if you want to make something twice as large). But you should be fine without any math.

If you have looked at formulas for glazes and some information on mixing various types of clays, you will see that accurate measurement is required. Not quite so obvious is the fact that you have to be able to do proportions/multiplications - If you gave a recipe for 1 liter and you need 2.5 to do the job or you have mixing for 100 pounds of clay but only need 25 pounds of mix, you will have to be able to scale up or down, or find someone to do it for you. If that is math and you can’t do it, then you may have a problem.
